WRITE A PLAY: Elementary (Kindergarten - Fifth Grade) is a year-round arts integration program providing students with the example, the inspiration, and the skills to write their own original plays. From field trips to the theatre to see professional productions, to an interactive performance created at your school, to playwrighting lessons that will develop the inner-artist in your students, this award-winning program is designed to inspire the next generation of playwrights. Now in its 32nd year, WRITE A PLAY reaches over 47,000 students annually across the state of Florida, nationally as far as Camden, NJ and Woodstock, IL, and as far as Scotland and Israel.

Play #1: The Play That Sets the Example

The three-part experience begins with The Play That Sets the Example. This year, that play is Junie B Jones: The Musical, with book and lyrics by Marcy Heisler and music by Zina Goldrich, adapted from the Junie B. Jones series of books by Barbara Park. Students can enjoy this production as a field trip to Florida Studio Theatre beginning September 26.

Alternatively, students can enjoy Aesop's Fables adapted by Sarah Durham, which tours directly to schools beginning January 7

Play #2: The Play That Inspires Playwriting

Up next, students experience an in-classroom lesson in playwriting by FST's Playmakers. The Playmakers tour to your school and perform examples of plays written by previous WRITE A PLAY winners. Then, the Playmakers will lead your students in a playwriting lesson, getting your students to write their own original plays. Students are invited and encouraged to submit their plays to FST's Annual Young Playwrights Festival writing competition, for a chance to have their plays produced in a professional production and brought to life by experienced actors.

Play #3: The Play That Celebrates Young Playwrights

Finally, your students will see the winning plays from the 2024-25 school year in a production titled, The Flying Penguin & Other Winning Plays. Performed by a cast of professional actors, this original production features an anthology of stories that only children and young adults could write, filled with laughter, lessons, and learning for us all.
