WRITE A PLAY: Elementary (Kindergarten - Fifth Grade) is a year-round arts integration program providing students with the example, the inspiration, and the skills to write their own original plays. From field trips to the theatre to see professional productions, to an interactive performance created at your school, to playwrighting lessons that will develop the inner-artist in your students, this award-winning program is designed to inspire the next generation of playwrights. Now in its 32nd year, WRITE A PLAY reaches over 47,000 students annually across the state of Florida, nationally as far as Camden, NJ and Woodstock, IL, and as far as Scotland and Israel.

Play #1: The Play That Sets the Example

The three-part experience begins with The Play That Sets the Example. This year, that play was Charlotte's Web, adapted by Joseph Robinette and based on the book by E.B. White. Students enjoyed this production as a field trip to Florida Studio Theatre.

Alternatively, students enjoyed The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe based on the story by C.S. Lewis and adapted by Clanche du Rand, which toured directly to schools.

Play #2: The Play That Inspires Playwrighting

Up next, students experience an in-classroom lesson in playwrighting by FST's Playmakers. The Playmakers tour to your school and perform examples of plays written by previous WRITE A PLAY winners. Then, the Playmakers will lead your students in a playwrighting lesson, getting your students to write their own original plays. Students are invited and encouraged to submit their plays to FST's Annual Young Playwrights Festival writing competition, for a chance to have their plays produced in a professional production and brought to life by experienced actors.

Play #3: The Play That Celebrates Young Playwrights

Finally, your students will see the winning plays from the 2022-23 school year! Performed by a cast of professional actors, this original production features an anthology of stories that only children and young adults could write, filled with laughter, lessons, and learning for us all.
