The Stories Behind the Songs

How Sweet It Is

May 23, 2025

Every great song starts with a moment—a memory, a heartbreak, a spark. Here’s the real-life soul behind some of the soundtrack.

"Groovin"

A Sunday hangout turned into a hit. Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals only had Sundays to see his girlfriend. One afternoon, she said, “We need to talk.” Fearing a breakup, he brought her a song instead: “Groovin’.” That quiet, breezy joy? It came straight from a real-life close call.

"Crusin"

A car ride. A song. A spark. Driving with his wife, Smokey Robinson heard a song on the radio that made them both go quiet—just enjoying the ride and the moment. That feeling became “Cruisin’,” a song that invites you to slow down and just be.

"I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)"

Grandpa’s charm. Lamont Dozier’s grandfather used to flirt with customers outside his wife’s beauty salon, calling out: “Looking good, sugar pie! Looking fine, honey bunch!” Those playful lines found their way into one of The Four Tops’ biggest hits.
