A Powerful Story of Transformation

March 5, 2025

Amanda Wilkin’s Shedding a Skin makes its North American debut with a powerful story of transformation, featuring Samaria Nixon-Fleming in a riveting one-woman performance. The play follows Myah, who, after impulsively punching her boss and quitting her corporate job, crashes into the home of Mildred, an older woman with her own emotional scars. Together, they embark on an unlikely journey of healing and self-discovery.

At its heart, Shedding a Skin explores the painful yet necessary process of letting go and embracing change. Myah’s journey from anger to vulnerability is mirrored in her growing connection with Mildred as both confront their deepest fears. Through sharp, witty dialogue and deeply human moments, Wilkin crafts a narrative that is both poignant and uplifting.

Director Nancy Rominger calls the play “a powerful, important piece at this moment in our world,” highlighting its relevance to themes of loneliness, reinvention, and intergenerational connection.

She adds, “This warm, funny, edgy, one-woman play is an incredible, inventive piece of theatre. With all of its sharp edges, there is genuine heart and optimism.”

Leading this production, Samaria Nixon-Fleming brings a commanding presence to the role of Myah. A New York-based actress, she has appeared on TV, New York stages, and regional theater. With Nixon-Fleming’s powerful performance at its core, Shedding a Skin is an emotional and thought-provoking experience, speaking to anyone at a personal crossroads. The play reminds audiences that transformation is often uncomfortable but always necessary.
