Cast and Creative Team

Richard HopkinsRichard Hopkins (Director, Show Concept and Development) Artistic Director of Florida Studio Theatre since 1980, Richard Hopkins has guided the company from a small touring group to a professional regional theatre.  Mr. Hopkins began his professional theatre career as a resident actor with Asolo State Theatre in Sarasota, Florida.  In 1974 he founded the Palisades Theatre Company in Washington, DC, which subsequently moved to St. Petersburg to become American Stage.  He served as its Producing Director from 1974-1980.  Additional experiences include: President of the Florida Professional Theatres Association (1983-1985), Panelist for Theatre Program of Florida Arts Council, and Director/Instructor for Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus’ Clown College (1981).  His many directing credits include:  Metamorphoses, The Bully Pulpit, God’s Man in Texas, Hysteria, Gross Indecency:  The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, 2: Goering at Nuremberg, Six Degrees of Separation, Execution of Justice, Death by Misadventure, Hi-Hat-Hattie, Invictus, Agnes of God, Beyond Therapy, True West, La Ronde, and Betrayal and numerous other plays and Cabaret projects including Sophie Tucker, Inspired Lunacy, and Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits, Over the Rainbow.

Jim Prosser (Show Development, Arrangements, Pianist) This is Jim’s eleventh season in the FST Cabaret for which he has developed and performed in numerous shows, including The Flip Side, Piano Men, Three Friends, GI Jive, and Too Darn Hot. He has also worked extensively for FST’s Education programs, writing scores for the WRITE A PLAY program, and  most recently Androcles and the Lion. FST Cabaret Club Development/Playing:  My One and Only Gershwin, Over the Rainbow, Inspired Lunacy, Harry Who?, Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits, Three Girls Berlin, By Mercer. Training: BM Degree in Theory/Composition from the College of Wooster.

Cast

Dianna BushDianna Bush was last seen in Sarasota while shimmying across the country in the national tour of Smokey Joe’s Cafe.  Other credits include Pericles and Cymbeline in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, the world premiere of Shore Points at The Irish Arts Center Manhattan, Red, Hot and Blue at Goodspeed Opera House, Othello with The Shakespeare Project, Company at The Huntington Theatre in Boston, Penelope at North Shore Music Theatre, Tommy at NJPAC, and the national tour of Leader of the Pack.

Steven FlaaSteven Flaa is very happy to finally be doing his first show at FST. A working actor for over twenty-five years, Steven has appeared at theatres from Montana to Miami. Some of his local work has included Sparky in Forever Plaid at the Jaeb Theatre at TBPAC and Malcolm in The Full Monty at the Golden Apple. Steven also recently directed The Big Bang and Little Shop of  Horrors at American Stage in St. Pete.

 

Richie McCallRichie McCall hails from New York City and was in both the Broadway production and national tour of Show Boat.  He was also seen in the national tour of Tommy Tune’s Grand Hotel and has toured extensively throughout Europe.  He just premiered his original solo show, Me and Stepin, about the life of film actor Stepin Fetchit in New York City.  Richie’s regional credits include productions of Pippin, Hamlet, Porgy and Bess, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Comedy of Errors, and Sweet Charity, to name a few.  He has appeared in several commercials and his television credits include One Life to Live, Caroline in the City and The Cosby Show.  He can be seen in the VH1 documentary Driven: Jennifer Lopez.  Richie was a founding member of the Judith Shakespeare Company in New York.  He was seen in FST’s productions of The Flip Side, It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues, The All Night Strut, My One and Only Gershwin and A Vaudeville Cabaret and is happy to return to Sarasota.

Gayle SamuelsGayle Samuels can currently be seen on television hosting The Souls Story with the infamous Jerry Butler.  She was last seen at The Florida Studio Theatre on the main stage in The World Goes Round. Most recently she played the role of Lynne in the film The Ties that Bind starring Marla Gibbs.  She played the wife of James Averyin Honeybee, starred opposite Ruby Dee in Flying Over Purgatory, played the role of Wanda in Crowns and toured internationally as a featured vocalist with Harry BelafonteHer Broadway credits include Sunset Boulevard, Grind, Dancin’ and Dreamgirls.  Off-Broadway she played Josephine Baker in The Dark Star From Harlem and Ronnette in Little Shop of Horrors. In Europe she starred in Sophisticated Ladies in Russia and toured as Charlaine in Ain’t Misbehavin’.
