Return to A Marvelous Party: The Noel Coward Celebration

Noël Coward (Author) Coward wrote more than 50 published plays from his teens onwards, and many of his works, such as Hay Fever, Private Lives, Design for Living, Present Laughter and Blithe Spirit, have remained in the regular theatre repertoire. He composed hundreds of songs, in addition to well over a dozen musical theatre works (including the operetta Bitter Sweet and comic revues), poetry, several volumes of short stories, the novel Pomp and Circumstance, and a three-volume autobiography. Coward won an Academy Honorary Award in 1943 for his naval film drama, In Which We Serve, and was knighted in 1969.

Mark Anders (Compiler) recently performed in Oh, Coward! for Arizona Theatre Company. He previously worked with director David Ira Goldstein in a production of Cowardly Custard 18 years ago and more recently he worked with fellow cast member Carl Danielsen in 2 Pianos, 4 Hands (US tour). In his native Seattle, he is known for his work at ACT, Intiman Theatre, The Empty Space Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre and Seattle Rep.

Carl Danielsen (Compiler/Musical Arrangements) recently performed in Oh, Coward! for Arizona Theatre Company. His other credits include 2 Pianos, 4 Hands (US tour/Northlight), Singin’ in the Rain, King Lear, Mary Stuart, Major Barbara, A Dream Play, A Dybbuk, Cole!, World Goes ‘Round, and 1776, among others. He studied acting at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, UK, and has a BA in music from the University of California, Berkeley.

David Ira Goldstein (Compiler) is the Artistic Director of Arizona Theatre Company, the southwest’s largest professional theatre performing in both Tucson and Phoenix, where he has directed dozens of productions ranging from classics to new plays to musicals and produced more than 130 other plays, workshops and presentations. Recent credits include the world premiere of The Kite Runner based on Khaled Hosseini’s novel, Hair, and the world premiere of Jeffrey Hatcher’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He has been a guest director at theatres across the country including Seattle Rep, Pasadena Playhouse, Berkeley Rep, Florida Stage, Northlight Theatre, Laguna Playhouse, Geva Theatre, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Mixed Blood and the Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis. Before moving to Arizona, Mr. Goldstein was Associate Artistic Director of ACT Theatre in Seattle and at Actors Theatre of St. Paul. He was a co-founder of Minnesota Young Playwrights. A Marvelous Party, has played extensively across the US, winning many awards including four Jeff Awards in Chicago (including Best Director), the Elliot Norton Award in Boston for Best Musical and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for Best Production.

Patricia Wilcox (Compiler) Co conceiver and original choreographer, A Marvelous Party has been seen at the Geva Theatre, Northlight Theatre (JEFF Award), Laguna Playhouse (LA Drama Critics Circle Award), ACT, Missouri Repertory Theatre, and Florida Stage. Ms. Wilcox’s other credits include Children’s Letters to God (Lamb’s Theatre), Bowfire (current national tour and PBS Special), Blues in the Night for the New York revival, the national and international companies, and Thames Television in London (Drama Logue Award and also NAACP Image Award nomination), Seussical (national tour), Guys and Dolls (Paper Mill Playhouse), Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Camelot and Aida (North Shore Music Theatre), The Pajama Game (Chicago’s Marriott Lincolnshire-Jeff nomination), Pirates of Penzance (Missouri Repertory Theatre), Jesus Christ Superstar, Cabaret, and A Little Night Music (Sacramento Music), My Fair Lady, HMS Pinafore, Hair and Scapan (Arizona Theatre Company), Die Fledermaus (Arkansas Opera), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Moscow Arts Center), Hit Me with a Hot Note (national tour), A Swell Party (Kennedy Center), and Broadway Under the Stars in Bryant Park in NYC. She choreographed the rock ‘n roll premiere of Falco- A Cyber Show for the Ronacher Theatre in Vienna, the premiere of A Magic Night for the Berns Theatre in Stockholm, and numerous tours and television shows in Europe. Ms. Wilcox staged original works for the Houston Symphony, Minnesota Pops, and Phoenix Symphony. She has also created numbers for ice skating gold medalists Viktor Petrenko, Ilia Kulik, Katya Gordeeva and two ice dancing teams for the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Richard HopkinsRichard Hopkins (Artistic Director) Artistic Director of Florida Studio Theatre since 1980, Richard Hopkins has guided the company from a small touring group to a professional regional theatre.  Mr. Hopkins began his professional theatre career as a resident actor with Asolo State Theatre in Sarasota, Florida.  In 1974 he founded the Palisades Theatre Company in Washington, DC, which subsequently moved to St. Petersburg to become American Stage.  He served as its Producing Director from 1974-1980.  Additional experiences include: President of the Florida Professional Theatres Association (1983-1985), Panelist for Theatre Program of Florida Arts Council, and Director/Instructor for Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus’ Clown College (1981).  His many directing credits include:  Metamorphoses, The Bully Pulpit, God’s Man in Texas, Hysteria, Gross Indecency:  The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, 2: Goering at Nuremberg, Six Degrees of Separation, Execution of Justice, Death by Misadventure, Hi-Hat-Hattie, Invictus, Agnes of God, Beyond Therapy, True West, La Ronde, and Betrayal and numerous other plays and Cabaret projects including Sophie Tucker, Inspired Lunacy, and Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits, Over the Rainbow.

Fred WeissFred Weiss (Director/ Choreographer) Fred Weiss’s work has been seen at the Broadway and Majestic Theaters in New York, the Ahmanson and Mark Taper Forum at the Los Angeles Music Center; Milwaukee Repertory Theater; Shakespeare at the Folgers in Washington, D.C.; Florida Studio Theatre; St. Louis Municipal Opera; Theater of the Stars in Atlanta, Georgia; Kansas City Starlight and Artpark, Lewiston, NY, among many others. He directed No Way To Treat a Lady and Showtune for Florida Studio Theatre. He is Professor of Theater at the Binghamton University where he is a past winner of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Stephen HopeStephen Hope* (Tap Choreographer)provided choreography for this season’s productions of Laughing Matters ‘09, A Murder, A Mystery and A Marriage and Steppin’ Out. Past productions include Laughing Matters…Too, Good Evening and adapting the original Off-Broadway choreography for Altar Boyz. His choreographic work has been seen at Lincoln Center and on regional stages around the country. As a performer he appeared in the original Broadway productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Off-Broadway in Ascension, Fairy Tales and Rabboni. FST audiences will recognize him from productions of The Exonerated, Ruthless!, his rapid-fire rendition of the periodic table in Tom Lehrer, as Katherine Harris in Laughing Matters…Too, and most recently, Laughing Matters ‘09.

Todd LindamoodTodd Lindamood (Pianist/Music Director) Todd has music directed Altar Boyz, Titanic, Les Miserables, W’full Town, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Big Bang and Bat Boy (Sarasota Mag and Herald-Tribune Best Music Directing award) and played keyboard for the Asolo’s production of A Tale of Two Cities. His acting credits include Al in A Chorus Line, Pepe in West Side Story, Of Thee I Sing (Arena Stage), Annie Get Your Gun (Westchester Broadway Theatre). Texas State grad!

 

 

Tony Bruno (Drums) Tony returns to FST after spending many years on the road drumming for several well-known circuses such as the Royal Hanneford Circus. He has also performed extensively for Circus World Museum in Baraboo, WI, and has been the exclusive drummer for the Circus Sarasota for the past eight years. Tony’s previous performances with FST include Heartbeats, Roleplay, No Way to Treat a Lady and Blue Plate Special.
