Return to A Murder, A Mystery and A Marriage

Aaron Posner (Book and Lyrics) Aaron is an artistic director, director and playwright. He is the founding artistic director of Philadelphia’s Arden Theatre Company, and the current artistic director of Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. Aaron’s produced adaptations of literature include Who am I This Time? By Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., What Ho, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse, The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Echoes of the Jazz Age by authors from the ‘20s, Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons, Third & Indiana by Steve Lopez, and Brief Interviews with Hideous Men by David Foster Wallace (with Scott Greer, Tony Lawton and Michael Hollinger). His adaptation of The Chosen with Chaim Potok was originally presented by the Arden and City Theatre and won the 1999 Barrymore Award for Best New Play. It is published by Dramatists Play Service and has been produced by more than 40 theaters across the country, and will be produced within the next year in Brazil and South America. His musical adaptation of Mark Twain’s A Murder, A Mystery, and a Marriage (with James Sugg) premiered in 2005 at the Delaware Theatre Company and the Roundhouse Theatre in Maryland and was nominated for 10 Barrymore Awards and the Charles MacArthur Award for Best New Play at the Helen Hayes Awards. His upcoming adaptations include another Chaim Potok novel, My Name Is Asher Lev (Arden Theatre, winter 2009), and So It Goes, from short stories by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (Two River Theater, winter 2009). Aaron is an Eisenhower Fellow, holds a B.S. in performance studies from Northwestern University, and is originally from Eugene, Oregon.

James Sugg (Music) James Sugg is an actor, sound designer, composer/musician who draws from all three disciplines while doing any one of these jobs. He is a member of Pig Iron Theatre Company with whom he has created 10 original pieces. He has worked at the Wilma, The Arden Theater, Seattle Rep, Actors Theater of Louisville, Folger Theater, Headlong Dance Theater, Rainpan 43 and Lucidity Suitcase Intercontinental. His work has been recognized with four Barrymores for Outstanding Sound Design and the F. Otto Haas Award for Emergining Theater Artist. In addition to 3M, he is the composer of James Joyce Is Dead and So Is Paris (Pig Iron) and The Sea (a one man electric chamber opera).

Richard HopkinsRichard Hopkins (Artistic Director) Artistic Director of Florida Studio Theatre since 1980, Richard Hopkins has guided the company from a small touring group to a professional regional theatre.  Mr. Hopkins began his professional theatre career as a resident actor with Asolo State Theatre in Sarasota, Florida.  In 1974 he founded the Palisades Theatre Company in Washington, DC, which subsequently moved to St. Petersburg to become American Stage.  He served as its Producing Director from 1974-1980.  Additional experiences include: President of the Florida Professional Theatres Association (1983-1985), Panelist for Theatre Program of Florida Arts Council, and Director/Instructor for Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus’ Clown College (1981).  His many directing credits include:  Metamorphoses, The Bully Pulpit, God’s Man in Texas, Hysteria, Gross Indecency:  The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, 2: Goering at Nuremberg, Six Degrees of Separation, Execution of Justice, Death by Misadventure, Hi-Hat-Hattie, Invictus, Agnes of God, Beyond Therapy, True West, La Ronde, and Betrayal and numerous other plays and Cabaret projects including Sophie Tucker, Inspired Lunacy, and Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits, Over the Rainbow.

Pamela Hunt (Director) - is delighted to return to FST where she directed A Marriage Minuet, Sylvia, Invasion of Privacy, Cakewalk, and Masterclass for the Mainstage; Motown Cabaret and Jacques Brel for the Cabaret. Sarasota audiences have also seen her productions of I Hate Hamlet, Communicating Doors, and Brighton Beach Memoirs at the Asolo. In New York City Pam was a 2004 nominee for outstanding director of a musical for The Musical of Musicals (The Musical) at the York Theatre and a commercial run at the Dodgers Theaters; 1993 Outer Critics’ Circle Award best revival of a musical, Carnival, York Theatre, The Last Musical Comedy; Tom Fontana’s The Overcoat starring Austin Pendleton, Cabaret Comes to Carnegie Hall starring Kaye Ballard. She produced/directed the 2008 American Musicals Project for the NYHistorical Society with Elaine Stritch hosting the final event. Pam has directed numerous regional theater productions for the Actors Theatre of Louisville, ACT, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, American Stage Festival, Cincinnati Playhouse, Cleveland Playhouse, Coconut Grove Playhouse, Colony Theatre, Florida Rep, GEVA, Laguna Playhouse, Milwaukee Rep, Ordway Theatre, Papermill Playhouse, Prince Theatre, Pioneer Theatre, San Jose Rep, Stagewest, Studio Arena Theatre, and Theatre Virginia. Stock credits include Pittsburgh CLO, Sacramento Music Circus, Theatre by the Sea, TUTS, Westport and Ogunquit Playhouses including 18 productions for the Cape Playhouse including Everybody Loves Opal starring Pat Carroll, Communicating Doors, Rue McClanahan; Moon Over Buffalo, Millicet Martin, Gavin MacLeod, and Jane Connell; Radio Gals, Dody Goodman; Putting It Together, Peter Scolari, Diana Canova, Michael Rupert; Mass Appeal, Malachy McCourt.

Stephen HopeStephen Hope* (Choreographer) returns to FST having provided original choreography for Laughing Matters…Too, Good Evening and most recently Altar Boyz. His choreographic work has been seen at Lincoln Center and on regional stages around the country. As a performer he appeared in the original Broadway productions of Joseph ... Dreamcoat, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Off-Broadway in Ascension, Fairy Tales and Dames at Sea. Sarasota audiences will recognize him from FST productions of The Exonerated, Ruthless!, his rapid-fire rendition of the periodic table in Tom Lehrer and his portrayal of Katherine Harris in Laughing Matters…Too.

Joyce NolenJoyce Nolen* (Sally Gray) - is happy to be at FST for the first time. On Broadway she performed in Smile, Stop the World with Sammy Davis Jr. and Different Times as well as several Off-Broadway Shows. Favorite regional shows include 42nd Street, The Music Man, Titanic, Into the Woods, Damn Yankees, South Pacific, My Fair Lady & Hello Dolly. Joyce started her career as a Radio City Rockette and performed in the Liberace show and at Carnegie Hall with Skitch Henderson and the N.Y. Pops.

The others, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (Sarasota Magazine best actor nominee), Over the River and Through the Woods (Best Actor winner, Sarasota Magazine), and the first Laughing Matters (Nothing from Sarasota Magazine).  He was most recently seen as The Genie, in Disney’s Aladdin, a Musical Spectacular, and in every domestic production of The Producers, where he played almost every role and understudied Tony Danza, David Hasselhoff, Jason Alexander, and Nathan Lane.  Love to Claire and Gabby.

Aaron YoungAaron Young* (Hugh Gregory) – Aaron is happy to be performing at FST. He was most recently seen touring the country in Cabaret. He has performed regionally at the 5th Avenue Theatre, Westchester Broadway Theatre, the Ordway Center, the American Musical Theatre of San Jose, and the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. Favorite credits include Urinetown (Bobby), Grease (Eugene), The Sound of Music (Rolf) and A Chorus Line (Mark). B.A. University of Northern Colorado.

Band

Irving Goldberg (Bass) Living and playing out of Clearwater, Irv’s ability and versatility make him a popular choice with music directors all over Florida. His recent Broadway works include Spamalot, Sweet Charity with Molly Ringwald, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Producers, Annie, Chicago with Tom Wopat, and Kathy Rigby’s farewell tour of Peter Pan. He also plays shows for such notables as Bernadette Peters, Michael Amonte, Michael W. Smith, Maureen McGovern, and Connie Francis when they are in Florida. 

Jens Kramer (Fiddle) is thrilled to join the cast of MMM. He recently ended the international tour of “Johnny Cash: Ring of Fire” which made a stop right here in Sarasota, FL. He was proud to be a part of the NYC Fringe Festival again this year and sends lots of love to his wife in New York-always patiently waiting for him to come home.

Alan Satkowski (Guitar/Banjo/Mandolin) is a 4th Generation Segovia trained classical Guitarist. 1,000’s of TV performances. Performed many shows from Broadway. Played with over 50 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Recipients. also a multi-instrumentalist, has played on many recordings.
